What is STAAR® Residential Trickling Filter System?

If your home or business is not connected to a central sewer system, you will need an onsite wastewater treatment system. All your household wastewater will be collected and treated on the spot. The SeptiTech® STAAR™ (Smart Trickling Anaerobic/Aerobic Recirculation) Residential Filter System is a reliable and low-cost way to treat your wastewater on site.

SeptiTech’s residential STAAR® systems can accommodate flows of 500 to 6,000 gallons per day. Local regulations will affect how many bedrooms or how many homes each model size can service (for instance, some codes require that a three-bedroom house use a 500 GPD system regardless of how many people are living in the home). Installation is straightforward and performed by highly qualified technicians.

How Does it Work?

STAAR® utilizes an unsaturated media and trickling filter technology to biologically treat wastewater. Wastewater is sprayed onto a media (in this case, bags filled with beads) where healthy microbes thrive. The aerated wastewater filters down through the beads, and as it does so, the microbes break down the organic material in the wastewater. This removes at least 90% of organics and suspended solids and 75% or more of the nitrogen from the water.

The treated water that leaves the system is much cleaner than the water that leaves a standard septic tank, which means that your drain field (aka leach field) will be healthier – and in some cases, smaller – than for a standard septic tank.

STAAR® is installed below-grade in plastic, concrete, or fiberglass tanks. The system is equipped with a “SMART” controller, which regulates the amount of oxygen entering the system. This feature, combined with the small pump used for recirculation, requires less power than comparable aerobic treatment units (ATUs) on the market.
